Overview

Improving student outcomes requires a good understanding of where your students are succeeding and where they are challenged. Having this understanding enables you to make data-informed adjustments to policies, practices, and programs.

IEBC data systems produce information that is useful, useable, and actionable. Our data displays are easily understood by all educators — not just information technology and research staff — because they address the important questions with simple visual impact.

IEBC analytics and research services help educators to understand the data, tell the important story, and use it to support needed changes.

In this section, you will find how we work with cross-segment data, our approach to research and evaluation and the availability of specific IEBC products and services that include the following: Full-Service Data Projects, Developing Solutions at Your Organization, Data Quality Consulting and Metric and Key Performance Indicator Development.

Linking Educational Data

IEBC can merge your data sets within and across pre-K, K12, community college, university and the labor market into single data warehouses where student cohorts can be tracked and reported on from the start of their education through their employment.

Our Analytics team has built cross-segment systems and developed associated reporting for K-12 and community college districts through statewide longitudinal data systems.  Many of the underlying data systems have data siloed within separate educational segments, and even those that have single student identifiers allowing student matching across multiple segments do not have output that is useful, usable, or actionable.

IEBC unlocks this data to make it available to tell the full story of a student’s academic progress and understand the impact of a state’s educational system on student subpopulations of interest. To accomplish our goals, we need to move the focus from the data to the users. IEBC Analytics can design, develop, and implement an analytical layer solution whose end result is cross-segment fact tables that bring together often disparate and dispersed data elements and weave them into an efficient storage unit to tell an end-to-end story for each student.

Research and Evaluation

IEBC conducts research and evaluation studies that address actionable issues in education. With funding from public and private sources our work shines a light on some of the most pressing educational issues and provides research-based solutions that are useful, usable, and actionable. Frequently, IEBC fulfills a supporting role in our partner organization’s research and evaluation efforts. Our partners trust us to provide them with valid and reliable data collected from student information systems and linked across the educational segments. We also develop evaluation systems used by program and policy implementers that drive program improvement efforts internally and inform external stakeholders.

Full-Service Data Projects

To better target your efforts, educators need to understand the student experience before the students come to our institutions and after they leave.

With its numerous products and tools, IEBC can merge your data sets within and across pre-K, K12, community college, university and the labor market into single data warehouses where student cohorts can be tracked and reported on from the start of their education through their employment.  We accomplish this by providing A to Z services required for end-to-end data systems, from developing data structures and identifying sources of incoming data to ensuring data quality and running analysis processes and producing the end reports.

Developing Solutions at Your Organization

Many institutions want to control, house and manage their own data and improve their reporting. IEBC data analysis and In-SITES® reporting solutions can be developed, deployed and operated at your site, with optional training, ongoing customization and maintenance.

Data Quality Consulting

Inaccurate data leads to inappropriate policy and practice changes. You want the best quality data to make the best decision at the right time.   Large databases are never perfect and are often problematic. Changes to underlying systems, standards or staffing — along with manual data entry — can lead to an introduction of errors, gaps, inconsistencies and inaccurate reporting over time.

IEBC has been collecting student level, unitary data for almost two decades. Our experience has given us a deep understanding of where data quality problems exist, and our data quality consulting services identify what may be causing issues with data and how to correct them.

Metric and Key Performance Indicator Development

Maybe you have a data warehouse on one end and a research agenda on the other and while you know what you want, you need assistance getting from A to B.  Data is more than numbers. It’s students. Having a few key indicators focused on what you care about can make the difference in improving students’ lives. For example, lagging indicators such as graduation rates are not helpful in understanding how to improve completion. On the other hand, leading indicators, defined by what you have control over that influence lagging indicators, are critical KPIs to be included in dashboards.  IEBC can assist in: refining research questions, developing SQL systems to produce output metrics and KPIs, and designing data displays that are user-friendly.
